Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in as a Private in Company B on September 13, 1862 (New Jersey Adjutant General records lists his name as Samuel Allston"). He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.

On February 21, 1865 he was mustered in as a Corporal in Company I, 40th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Sergeant on March 22, 1865, he served through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on July 13, 1865.

On August 6, 1902 he filed for a United States Army Pension (Application #1289068, Certificate #1112475). On July 2, 1915 his wife, Mary E. Alston, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #1049703, Certificate #796, 529).
