Actor. His hulking build and unsubtle facial features typed him in villainous roles, sometimes for comic effect. He is probably best remembered as Cholla, the bumbling leader of a motorcycle gang in the Clint Eastwood vehicles "Every Which Way But Loose" (1978), and "Any Which Way You Can" (1980). Born John William Saunders, III, he was an aerospace engineer before he decided to try performing in the late 1960s. Eastwood first hired him "for his face" in "High Plains Drifter" (1973), then told him he felt he got a bonus because Quade could also act. Over a 25-year career he appeared in such films as "Papillon" (1973), "The Sting" (1973), "Mr. Ricco" (1975), "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (1976), and "Cattle Annie and Little Britches" (1981), while his scores of television credits include episodes of "The Wild, Wild West", "Bonanza", "Kung Fu", "The Rockford Files", and "The A-Team". He also played Sheriff Biggs in the miniseries "Roots" (1977). Quade died in his sleep at his home near Lancaster, California.
