Clergyman. Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal (later United Methodist) Church from 1944 until 1953. He was instrumental in the development of Gulfside Assembly in Waveland, Mississippi, a Methodist retreat, which at one time was the only place along the entire Gulf of Mexico that would accommodate African Americans.
