Frank Fesq was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States as an adult and lived in Newark, NJ. The 40th New Jersey Infantry Regiment was organized at Trenton, N.J. on February 2nd, 1864. Fesq was mustered into Company A in October, 1864, and left immediately for Petersburg, Va. on October 24th, 1864. His company and other 40th NJ companies were attached to the 4th Infantry Regiment till 6 companies arrived, and the 40th NJ was organized and attached to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the VI Army Corps under Major General Horatio G. Wright. Fesq fought at the Battles of Dabney’s Mills, Hatcher’s Run, and the final assault on the Petersburg line. He participated in the pursuit of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and was at Appomattox Court House when Lee surrendered that army. The 40th NJ Infantry Regiment took up garrison duty at Danville, VA April 27th till May 18th, 1865, then traveled to Washington, DC to participate in the Grand Army of the Republic Review June 8th, 1865. The regiment was mustered out of service on July 13th, 1865.
