Norma Carlson Woodland was born at home in Pocatello, Idaho, August 25, 1926, to Lillie Charlotte Carlson Woodland and James Melvin Woodland. She was the fourth of six children; two brothers (Melvin and Ward) and one sister (Charlotte) were older, and one brother (Dale) and one sister (Clara) were younger.
She attended Washington Elementary School, Franklin Junior High School, and was consistently an "A" student on the honor roll at Pocatello High School. Shy and reserved, she never participated in extra-curricular activities at school. However, she did attract the attention of a young man who sat in front of her in sophomore history, Robert Joseph "Joe" Galloway, who she married after he returned from Brazil where he served with the Army Air Corp during World War II. They were wed May 7, 1947, in the Idaho Falls, Idaho, LDS Temple.
During the next nine years, Norma and Joe had six children. Almost all of this time they lived in Pocatello, due in part to Norma's desire to be near her parents, sisters, and their families. Visits to and from grandmothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins were a regular part of life for her children. She taught 3 and 4-year-olds in Primary (the LDS Church organization for children) and sang alto in the Relief Society (the LDS Church organization for women) Singing Mothers Choir.
She was an attentive, loving mom, always there when her children came home from school. They could count on the house being filled with the smell of home-made bread when she did her weekly baking. Her children have memories of her playing games with them and teaching them life skills.
Two years before her death she worked the late afternoon/evening shift at Lamb-Weston potato processing plant just outside of town to help with the expenses of raising a family of 6 kids. It was at the end of these two years she suffered a stroke—a cerebralvascular incident (CVI)—in the busy morning hours while getting her family ready for school and work. Her co-workers thought so highly of her, they took up a collection to make sure her medical benefits didn't lapse during her illness. They were hoping for the best, but it was not to be. In the two weeks of her hospitalization, she never revived. She died Nov. 26, 1962, in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was just 36 years old.
Her oldest child was two months from her 15th birthday. Her youngest was 5 years old. She is greatly missed to this day and always will be, until we are together again.
