Businessman, US Senator. In 1875 he founded what would become the Prudential Life Insurance Company in a basement office in Newark, New Jersey. The company was the first to provide affordable industrial, life and burial insurance to the working class. The popularity of the concept and his business acumen helped build it into a multi-million dollar company, reaching one million policies written by 1885. He also gained wealth by investing in and controlling public transportation and banking endeavors in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. In 1902 he was elected as a Republican Senator from New Jersey to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator William J. Sewell, and served until 1907.
