Major League Baseball Player. For eight seasons (1947 to 1954), he played at the third-base and shortstop positions with the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals. Born Peter Paul Castiglione, he signed as an amateur free agent with Pittsburgh in 1940. Following service in the United States Navy during World War II, he resumed his Minor League career and was promoted to the Pirates' big league club on September 10, 1947. He appeared in 13 games that season, posting a .280 batting average. His most productive year was in 1951, when he recorded a career-high 126 hits in 132 games. During the course of his career, he was a challenge for opposing pitchers, as he struck-out only 126 times in 1,670 official at-bats (excluding base-on-balls). In 545 career games, he amassed 426 hits, with a .255 lifetime batting average. Following his playing career, he served as a scout with the Pirates' organization. In addition, he worked for the US Postal Service.
