Born in Maryland but came out to Nevada just as the Civil War was starting as his family were Union people in a mostly pro-Confererate State. His family ran a bakery in Gold Hill but in 1865 Joseph moved out to Austin, Nevada, to work at a cattle ranch. It was there in Oct 1868 he contacted a fever (brain fever) and died on Oct 30th, 1868, at age 21. His family had his body shipped to Gold Hill and he was buried in the local cemetery on Nov. 10th, 1868. His family stayed in Nevada until the middle of the 1870s when they moved to California.

Updated information 04/24/2020 by Mark's Mom. The real story is...
Joseph was Rufus Britton Anderson and in San Francisco he was known as Johnny Callahan. Rufus did not die from "brain fever" he was executed by hanging for killing Noble T. Slocum.
During his execution the rope broke twice thus on the third time he died. His mother Mrs. A. Zottman and his sister Mrs. Hanna accompanied his body for burial by Wells Fargo stage. Even though the headstone reads Joseph Rufus Anderson I believe him to be Rufus Britton Anderson
