Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1843 and fought in the war with Mexico. When the Civil War erupted he helped raise the 4th California Volunteers and became its Colonel in September, 1861. The 4th, served in the Washington defenses and he was promoted to Brigadier General in March, 1862. He was named Acting Inspector General of the Army of Tennessee and commanded a division during the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi. He was assigned as Acting Inspector General of the Army of the Ohio in October, 1862 and was assigned to command the 3rd division of the XXIII Corps in May, 1863. He spent the remainder of the war assigned to various administrative duties in the Department of the Cumberland. After the war, he remained in the Regular Army as a Colonel assigned to garrison duty in Plattsburg, New York, where he died.
