Clementina Trenholm Fessenden is recognized in Canada and throughout the Commonwealth as the Founder of Empire Day, a patriotic event established in the schools of Ontario in 1897 to honour the British Empire and all things British

Originally held on the last day of classes before the May 24th school holiday - Queen Victoria's birthday - Empire Day continued as a National and Commonwealth event until well after the Second World War. In 1957 it was designated as Commonwealth Day and is now observed annually in most member countries on the 2nd Monday in March

Today in Canada, Britain and around the globe, the Victoria Day holiday celebrates the birthdays of both our present monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, and her predecessor, Queen Victoria

Amongst her other endeavours, Clementina Fessenden was also organizing secretary of the Hamilton Ontario Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), and author of 'Our Union Jack', 'The Genesis of Empire Day', and other pamphlets. She was highly active in the community of Hamilton, and her extensive resumé of civic achievements is most remarkable for a woman of the early 1900s

Daughter of Edward Trenholme and Marianne Ridley, Clementina was born at the village of Trenholm, Kingsey Township, Drummond County, in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, and educated at a ladys' seminary in Montreal

She married the Reverend Elisha Joseph Fessenden on January 4, 1865, at her parents' home in Kingsey Township

Mother of 4 sons, the eldest of whom was the 'Father of Radio Broadcasting', Reginald Aubrey Fessenden (1866-1932)

The Fessendens lived first in Austin, Quebec (near Bolton in the Eastern Townships), where their eldest son was born. In 1868 Rev Fessenden was called to minister at Fergus, Ontario, followed by Chippawa near Niagara Falls in 1878. Three more sons arrived while the Fessendens lived in Fergus

From 1893 until his death in 1895, Reverend Fessenden was Rector of St John's Anglican Church, Ancaster, Ontario, where he and Clementina, with their youngest son, Victor, lie at rest.
