Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in what was then Bromberg, Prussia (now Bydgoszcz, Poland) in 1824, he served time as an officer in the Prussian Army, fighting in the 1848 Revolutions before emigrating to the United States in 1849. A successful businessman, he is alleged to have offered his services to the United States Government to fight the South in January 1861. After the Civil War broke out in April 1861, he was commissioned first as a Captain, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He served with his regiment in key early Battles in the West, fighting at Wilson's Creek (August 1861), Island No. 10 (February 1862), Iuka (September 1862) and Corinth (October 1862). On May 23, 1862 he was promoted to Colonel and commander of the 5th Iowa. In December 1862 he was elevated to brigade command, serving first as commander of the Army of the Tennessee's 3rd Brigade, 7th Division, in the XVI Corps, then as commander of the 3rd Brigade, 7th Division of the XVII Corps. He led his brigade with distinction in the campaign to capture Vicksburg, Mississippi, and in the siege and capture of Jackson, Mississippi. Promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 4, 1863 (to rank from November 29, 1862). In the fall of 1863 his Corps was sent to relieve the beleaguered Union forces in Chattanooga (after the Union defeated at Chickamauga in September 1863), where they participated in the November 25 1863 Battle of Missionary Ridge. During the battle he was severely wounded in the head while leading the brigade in a charge. He returned to participate in the opening stages of the 1864 Atlanta Campaign, but his wounds forced him to resign in May 1864. Worn out by his exertions, he would die in Burlington in 1868, only three years after the end of the Civil War.
