Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as Captain, and commander of Company K, 100th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee on November 25, 1863. His citation reads “To encourage his men whom he had ordered to lie down while under severe fire, and who were partially protected by slight earthworks, himself refused to lie down, but walked along the top of the works until he fell severely wounded”. His Medal wasawarded to him on May 16, 1899, 36 years after his brave act. He was one of two 100th Indiana soldiers to beawarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the other being Major Ruel Johnson).
