Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. In August 1862, he enlisted in the Union Army and served as a Private in Company H, 83rd Indiana Infantry. On May 22, 1863, during the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Private Blasdel volunteered to be a member of a storming party to build a bridge across a moat and plant scaling ladders against a Confederate embankment in advance of the main attack. Despite repeated attacks, Private Blasdel with a few others held off the enemy until they could retreat at nightfall. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Corporal and awarded the Medal of Honor. He died at age 89 in Hutchinson, Kansas.
