US Congressman, US Senator. He attended Nathaniel Ogden’s Latin school, apprenticed as a tailor in 1796 and taught in the local school. He studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, was licensed as physician and practiced machine in Cedarville, New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly. In 1815, he was elected a National Republican to the Fourteenth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1823 and was president of the New Jersey State Council, in 1826. He was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Joseph McIlvaine, serving from 1826 to 1829. After his Senate term, he died shortly after due to failing health at age 48.
