Son of Benjamin and Mary (Whitehead) Denson. He was born in Isle of Wight County VA sometime before 1756, the exact date is unknown. He married Mary Polly Watkins on 9 May 1776 in Northampton County NC. There were five known children born to this union: John Denson (born June 1778 in NC), Rhoda Denson (born 21 March 1780 in NC), Calley Denson, William Denson (born about 1785 in NC), and Joseph W. Denson. He was originally a Quaker but was probably disowned for mustering during the Revolutionary War. He and his family migrated to Georgia, via South Carolina, probably in the late 1780s. A Joseph Denson appears on the 1793 Wilkes County GA Tax List. His name also shows up on other GA county records, including Putnam County, where he was listed as 70-80 years old in the 1830 Census, which would have put his birth year as sometime around 1750-1760. Also, in the 1832 Putnam County records, it shows that he won a lot in Gilmer County, in the Cherokee Land Lottery. He was listed as Joseph Denson Sr. and was given extra draws because he attested that he was a Revolutionary War soldier. His name was not listed on the Putnam County GA 1840 Census nor was there any will or estate settlement found. Presumably, he died in Georgia (either in Gilmer or Putnam County) between 1832-1840, perhaps 1838. The exact location of his burial is unknown.
