Bank of England Director. He served in this position from 1868 until 1889. Born in England, the 2nd son of British banker and politician Lionel de Rothschild, he came from a prestigious and wealthy Jewish family whose banking roots went back to Germany in the 1760s. He received his education at King's College School in London, England and Trinity College in Cambridge, England but left without receiving a degree. While at Trinity College, he met and befriended the Prince of Wales, who would later become King Edward VII. After leaving Trinity College, he began working for his father's bank, N M Rothschild, in London. Five years later, at age 26, he became director of the Bank of England and was the first Jew to attain that position. In 1902 he was bestowed the Royal Victorian Order by King Edward VII. Other awards he received in his lifetime include the French Legion of Honor, the Prussian Order of the Crown, and the Austrian Grand Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph. Prior to World War I, he served as Consul-General for Austria in London. A lover of art, he served as trustee for the National Art Gallery and the Wallace Collection in London. He suffered from poor health in his later life and died in London following a short illness at the age of 75.
