U.S. Congressman. Born in Kingston, New York, he graduated from Princeton College in 1782, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1785 and practiced law in Kingston. In 1797, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Congresses, serving until 1803. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the New York State Assembly (1804-05), served in the New York State Senate (1814-17), was the first judge of the court of common pleas for Ulster County (1815-21), and surrogate of Ulster County (1835-40). He died at age 85 in Kingston, New York.
