Working closely with wealthy businessman and philanthropist William Volker, he created what is now the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Volker donated the land for the campus, and Ernest Newcomb worked for 8 years without pay. He wrote the school's charter, hired the faculty, outlined the courses and opened the University which in the beginning was the University of Kansas City. He left the school in 1938, but in 1977 he was publicly acknowledged as the father of the University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC).
