U.S. Congressman. Moving to Illinois, he graduated from Carthage College in 1876, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1878 and commenced to practice law in Quincy, Illinois, in 1880. He was the Quincy City Attorney (1884-87). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress, serving until 1889. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in the practice of law until his death.
