Civil War Union Army Officer. Commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 18, 1861. Served through the Battles of Williamsburg and in the early days of the 1862 Peninsular Campaign as an aide-de-camp to General Joseph Hooker before being advanced to Captain and commander of Company E on May 27, 1862, replacing Captain Henry C. Cooper, who resigned. Led his Company through the rest of the Campaign, the Seven Days Battles and the 2nd Bull Run Campaign. In the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, his unit was part of General Hooker's reserves when his Division attacked the entrenched positions of Stonewall Jackson near the unfinished Railroad Cut on August 29. When the 7th New Jersey were called upon to take part, Captain Abbott advanced with them, and was shot in the forehead and instantly killed while waving his sword in encouragement.
