Served through the Battles of Williamsburg and in the early days of the 1862 Peninsular Campaign as an aide-de-camp to General Joseph Hooker before being advanced to Captain and commander of Company E on May 27, 1862, replacing Captain Henry C. Cooper, who resigned. Led his Company through the rest of the Campaign, the Seven Days Battles and the 2nd Bull Run Campaign.
