George Gordon Meade: Sir, you will be remembered having a career United States Army officer and civil engineer involved in coastal construction, including several lighthouses. He fought with distinction in the Second Seminole War and Mexican-American War. During the American Civil War he served as a Union general, rising from command of a brigade to the Army of the Potomac. You will be best known for defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. General Meade:Happy 197th birthday. Thank you for your service to the Union cause at Gettysburg!

Rest in peace, General. Thank you for your service and your dedication to duty. God bless you for your gallant defense of our Union and for preserving it against those who would have destroyed it. The hero of Gettysburg, you remained commander of the Army of the Potomac, but were overshadowed, probably unfairly by Grant. You did your duty to the end which was indeed commendable.

With honor and respect for your efforts to save this country...You were only head of the Army of Potomac for a short while when Grant came to take over, but Gettysburg was a key victory. Pennsylvania was your home and President Lincoln knew you would fight well there. Rest well sir.
