US Congressman, US Senator. As a young man he worked summers to aid the family, attended public school and the Canandaigua Academy, where he was a classmate of future Senator Stephen A. Douglas. In school he studied Law and Civil Engineering. In 1844 he was admitted to the bar and practiced in Canandaigua, New York. In 1867 he was a member of the constitutional convention of New York. He was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth in 1874 and served in the 3 succeeding Congresses until he resigned on July 29, 1881. His resignation from the Congress was caused by his being chosen to fill the Senate seat of Roscoe Conkling, who resigned to protest the appointments of several federal employees in New York State. While in the Congress in 1876 he was one of the managers appointed to conduct the impeachment of ex-Secretary of War William Belknap. He served out the remainder of Conkling's term and chose not to be a candidate for reelection. He returned to his law practice in hometown of Canandaigua where he died, on a Wednesday, at his home Glengarry on the shore of Lake Canandaigua.
