Delaware Governor. Successful with his father in the mercantile business, he entered politics as a member of the Delaware House of Representatives, serving (1831-33). He also served in the Delaware General Assembly and as a delegate to the Whig National Conventions, (1840, 44). In 1854, he was elected as a Whig the 30th Governor of Delaware, serving until 1859. After leaving office, he served as president of the Junction and Breakwater Railroad and resumed his former business interests until his death at age 70.
