U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Emory College in 1845, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and rather than practice law, he engaged in the warehouse. He served in the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1853, 55, 57) and was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving (1859-61). During the Civil War, he served as Colonel of the 45th Georgia Infantry, Confederate Army. He also was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1863-64, 74). In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885.
