U.S. Senator. He moved to Gallatin County, Montana, in 1907, studied at Montana State College, at the University of Chicago Law School in 1921 and became a successful rancher. He was a member of the Montana State House of Representatives, (1933-37) and a member of the Montana State Senate, (1937-46). In 1946, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1953. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his ranching interest until his death at age 62.
