U.S. Senator. Educated in civil engineering at Sinsiniwa College, Wisconsin, he practiced engineering and taught school. He was a surveyor in Dakota, in 1860 and engaged in the steam ship trade on the Missouri River, (1861-67). Moving to Montana, he settled in Helena in 1876, engaged in mercantile pursuits and in banking and was a member of the first constitutional convention of Montana in 1883. Upon the admission of Montana as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1890-95). After his term, he engaged in banking, stock raising and ran a prominent mercantile company.
