US Congressman, US Senator. Elected to represent South Carolina's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1829 to 1833. Also served as a Member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives in 1826, United States Senator from South Carolina in 1850, Delegate to South Carolina Secession Convention in 1861, Delegate from South Carolina to the Confederate Provisional Congress from 1861 to 1862, and Senator from South Carolina in the Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1865.
