My Dad, LTC Edward Roy Hindman, Sr., USA, Retired, United States Military Academy Class of 1949, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was an Army Captain and a Commander of an Engineering Unit in the Korean War in 1951. During my Dad's last years on earth, he told me twice about SGT Cornelius Charlton and how he first served in my Dad's Engineering Unit and that "we got into an argument", and that Dad then transfered SGT Charlton to an Infantry Unit that was fighting the enemy. Dad informed me that SGT Charlton earned the Congressional Medal of Honor in Korea. Dad said that many years later he flew up to New York to the Bronx to see and apologize to SGT Charlton's mother, and that she said that she is a Christian and that she forgave him. This statement of forgiveness impacted my Dad so very greatly and wonderfully since he had felt very badly about transfering SGT Charlton, as the Sergeant died the next day on June 2, 1951 from wounds he had received from the enemy. I would then a short while after that when Dad was very ill and in his last days on earth, lead my own Dad to the amazing and saving grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ whom Dad prayed with me to receive into his own heart and life with his own Damascus Road conversion to Christ. Praise the Lord, my Dad is in heaven today partly because of the influence of the testimony of the very kind and forgiving mother of SGT Charlton. Psalm 91, John 14:1-6 and Acts Chapter 22. Praise our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ forever! Amen and Amen!!!
