US Senator. He was one of the leading businessman in San Francisco, California during the later half of the 19th Century, having moved there from his native state of Maine in 1861. He was elected as a Republican Senator from California to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator John F. Miller, who died on March 8, 1886. Senator Williams served from August 4, 1886 to March 3, 1887, when Democrat George Hearst assumed the seat.
