Songwriter. For over 40 years, he was known as Mr. Song Machine in the world of country music. He began his career at age 15, performing in clubs, high school auditoriums, theatres and live on local radio shows. In 1968, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he began a musical path as a country music songwriter. His songs have been recorded by artists Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Kenny Rogers, Travis Tritt, among many others. Some of his more than 300 recorded credits include "I Think I'm in Love", "Lay a Little Lovin' on Me", "Between an Old Memory and Me" and "All American Country Boy" He received three Grammy Award nominations for Song of the Year with "She's Single Again" (1985), "The Generation Gap" (1988) and "Wanted" (1990). Five of his songs were on the sound track of the Academy Award winning movie, "Tender Mercies" (1983) and his tune "One Foot Dragging", was used on the TV series "Northern Exposure". He is also credited for producing acts for Warner Brothers, A&R, Gusto and Giant Records. In 1998, he was inducted into South Carolina Entertainment Hall of Fame and in 2008, he released an album entitled "The Hitmaker", with himself performing 12 hits he had written for some of country music's biggest stars.
