U.S. Congressman. He attended Paris Academy, graduated from the University of Missouri in 1859 and was the principal of the schools in Paris, Missouri. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Paris, Missouri. He was prosecuting attorney of Monroe County, a delegate to the Missouri State convention in 1890 and a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives, (1895-97). In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress, serving until 1899. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 76.
