U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Vanderbilt University Tennessee, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1876 and commenced to practice law in Gadsden, Alabama. He served in the Alabama State House of Representatives, in 1884 and a member of the Alabama State Senate, in 1886. In 1889, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress and to the next ten succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 65.
