U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice law in Stamford, Connecticut. Entering politics, he was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1804-05, 1808-10, 1814-15, 1817-18) and judge of probate for the Stamford district, in 1819. In 1819, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth Congress, serving until 1921. After leaving Congress, he was the Stamford Justice of the Peace, until 1826, Stamford Postmaster (1822-29), and judge of Fairfield County Court, in 1823. Retiring from public service, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
