US Congressman. Born at Lee, Massachusetts, he built and operated a sawmill in Ohio in 1850, then moved to Bay City, Michigan, in 1858 and engaged in the salt industry. He was elected to three terms as Bay City justice of the peace, became the first mayor of Bay City in 1865 and served as a member of Michigan State Senate, (1866-68). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1877. Not a candidate for renomination, he engaged in the lumber business in Bay City and was instrumental in establishing the first beet-sugar factory in the State of Michigan. He died at age 75 in Bay City, Michigan.
