The 122nd Emperor of Japan. The second son of the Emperor Komei, he succeeded to the throne in 1867. In December of the same year, the imperial rule was restored and a period of accelerated social change known generally as the "Meiji Restoration" began. During his reign, Japan's capital was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo, where the former Edo Castle was made into the Imperial palace. During this time, the supreme power of the state came to be concentrated in the emperor's hand, although the business of government was carried out by his ministers. The popular emperor often presented himself to the public. His physical remains are interred in the Momoyama Mausoleum, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto. One can seek an audience with his spirit at the Meiji Jinju (shrine) in Tokyo.
