Canadian politician. Born in Bramhope Hall, in Yorkshire (England) on November 29, 1821. He joined the British army in May 1838, as an ensign in the 68th Foot (Infantry Durham-Light). He arrived in Canada in August 1841 and served in Quebec from October 1842 to May 1844. He went back to England, but returned to the colony in 1847; this same year, he left the army with the rank of captain. In 1848, he bought the domain of Benmore, in Sillery, where he established himself and dealt with horticulture. He became active in exploration and mining in the counties of Wolfe and Mégantic, during the years 1860. He was administrator of many companies, among which the Bank of Union of Lower-Canada, from which he had been one of the founders. He was a prominent businessman in the bridges and railways building industry. He was elected representative for Mégantic in 1854 and generally supported the Reformists, and later the Conservatives. He did not represent himself in 1858. He joined Premier Mercier’s cabinet on December 7, 1888 in the capacity of Commisioner for Agriculture and Colonization. He was elected Liberal representative for Mégantic to the Legislative Assembly in a by-election on December 27, 1888. He was defeated in 1890. He was President in 1883 and 1884 of the Society of Geography of Québec. As President of the Horticulture Society, he was one of the promoters of the Agricultural Merit, created in 1890. Cofounder in 1851 of the Association for the Music Hall of Québec, he was also Justice of the Peace and lieutenant-colonel in the militia. He was best known as “Colonel Rhodes”. He died in Sillery, on February 16, 1892.
