Massachusetts Governor. He was successful leather goods businessman, president of the Brothers & Smith Company, a member of the Norwood Board of Assessors, (1910-15) and was a Massachusetts Norwood Town Selectman, (1915-22). He also was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1918-19), a member of the Massachusetts Senate, (1921-24) and Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, (1924-29). In 1929, he was elected as a Republican the 51st Governor of Massachusetts, serving until 1931. While in office, he established the Massachusetts Transit Authority, the state's Industrial Commission, expanded facilities to care for the sick and appointed two women to judgeships in Massachusetts. After his term, he served as Chairman of the Board for the Brothers & Smith Company, until his death at age 76.
