U.S. Senator. Moving to Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1853, he received a classical education and became successful in the hardware business. He relocated to Territory of Dakota, in 1882, became a rancher and was chairman of the North Dakota Committee on Irrigation as commissioner of Foster County, in 1887. Upon the admission of North Dakota as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1889-93). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he lived in retirement until his death at age 76.
