U.S. Congressman. After attending Ohio University, he graduated from Augusta College Kentucky in 1844, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1846 and opened a law practice in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Entering politics, he was a member of the West Virginia State House of Delegates, (1849-52). In 1854, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John F. Snodgrass, serving until 1855. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and served as a delegate to the West Virginia State constitutional convention in 1861. He also served in the West Virginia House of Representatives in 1871 and was superintendent of free schools and adjutant general of the State of West Virginia, from 1871, until he resigned in 1873. In 1873, he was elected as judge of the West Virginia second judicial circuit and served until his death.
