Ben was an American happy-go-lucky high school student who loved Ace Ventura movies and the Final Fantasy Seven role-playing video game. He had moved to Springfield from Southern Oregon a year before his death, and had started developing a relationship on then-15 year old Shianne Shryer. He once told his friends that when he grew up, he wanted to own a brewery. He is survived by his parents and a brother.

Sadly, Ben was one of two students killed in the Thurston High School shooting that took place on May 21, 1998. Kip Kinkel, after killing his parents William and Faith a day before, went into the schoolhouse armed with a gun, and opened fire in the cafeteria. Ben was standing in a hallway talking with his friends when the shooting occurred. The day after the shooting, he died from his injuries at the hospital. At his funeral, Springfield Mayor Bill Morrisette announced that Ben's organs had been donated to 12 others.
