He served with the US Army from 1955 until 1957 and initiated his political career, serving as a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1969 until 1972. He was a member of Wyoming's State Senate from 1973 until his election to the US Senate in 1976. During his tenure in Washington, Wallop was a proponent of President Reagan's initiative of the "Star Wars" space defense program and for his strong efforts for an anti-communist policy in Central America.
