Amenhotep I

Most people know little to nothing about Ancient Egypt or the Great Pharaohs that ruled it. However, anyone who is well versed in the Bible should absolutely know, acknowledge, and revere the greatest Pharoah that ever lived, and that is Amenhotep I. This is the Pharaoh from the Joseph Story. Amenhotep I was the one who cared for Joseph, and had such great admiration for him that he gave him the power to be second in command of all of Egypt, this to a slave, and an alien slave that wasn’t even from Egypt. He taught Joseph everything he knew, and because of him, allowed Jacob and the brothers to settle into Egypt during the famine. Had it not been for these heroic efforts, the Hebrews may not have survived, and there would be no Jewish people, and no Jesus. It is important to remember that in the context of the Bible, the only two major Pharaohs that are relevant are Amenhotep, which brought in Jacob and the brothers, and Ramses II, who decimated the Hebrews and Moses. We must remember that while todays King is great, the next one may not. However, this is simply a matter of personalities, different people at different times who were raised differently, had different attitudes, and had different advisors. It does not reflect on the previous predecessor in any way, they are simply different people. While the abhorrent practices of Ramses II serve as a reminder of the corruptibility of power and utter evil of men, we must also reflect on the greatness of men such as Pharaoh Amenhotep, who raised Joseph to power, and brought in the Hebrews to reside in his own country, affording them their own secluded area and safety. This great man cared for the Jewish people, and had enough respect for Joseph to allow him to bury his father in the Caves of Machpella, which was his wish, so he could be with his fathers. Ultimately, Joseph had two fathers, Jacob and Amenhotep, and while it is nobody’s position to judge who was a better father, we must all acknowledge the great influence and impact that Amenhotep I did for both Joseph, the Hebrews, and ultimately, through Christ himself. On a personal note, let this story provide you with the essence of the fifth commandment: “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you”.
