U.S. Congressman. At the age of 19 he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1893, obtained a clerical position with Walter Goodman Cotton Company and later started a successful business career as a broker and trader. Entering politics under his direction known as "Boss" Crump, the Democrat, he was a member of the Memphis Board of Public Works, in 1905, fire and police commissioner, in 1907, Mayor of Memphis, (1910-15) and delegate to numerous Democratic National Conventions, in the 1920s. In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and Seventy-third Congresses, serving until 1935. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was the Regent of the Smithsonian Institution and again elected Mayor of Memphis, in 1939. He then resumed his previous business activities and engaged in farming until his death at age 80.
