World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Machine-Gun Corps, Australian Imperial Force. On September 1, 1918, during the assault on Mont St Quentin, France, he distinguished himself. In the early stages of the advance Towner single-handedly captured an enemy machine-gun, then brought his men forward to produce effective fire on the Germans position. He later took twenty-five prisoners before capturing another machine-gun and then re-fired so effectively that the enemy retired, enabling the Australians to complete the advance. Even when wounded, Towner continued to fight and to inspire his men. For bravery in action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in December 1918 and later achivied the rank of Major.
