U.S. Congressman. He attended Ebenezer Academy and Maryville College, (1813-17) studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Knoxville, Tennessee. He served in the Indian campaigns (1818-19) and held a commission in the United States Volunteers until 1830. In 1833, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1837. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a judge of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Tennessee, (1840-49), a member of the Tennessee State Senate, (1851, 53, 57) and served in the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1857-59).
