New York Governor. He graduated Union College, in 1846, studied law, was admitted to the bar and established his legal career in New York City. Entering politics, he was a member of the New York State Democratic Central Committee, in 1848, was the recorder of New York City, (1860-64) and served as Mayor of New York City, (1865-68). In 1869, he was elected as a Democrat the 23rd Governor of New York, serving until 1872. During his two terms, Syracuse University was established and a new state capitol was planned. After leaving office, he retired from political life and practiced law until his death.
