Georgia Governor. As a successful businessman, he was a member of the Augusta City Council for 12 years, Mayor of Augusta Georgia, (1857-59) and president of the Georgia Senate. When Governor Rufus Bullock resigned in 1871, he was appointed as a Republican the 32th Governor of Georgia, serving until 1872. During his short tenure, the predominately Democratic legislature nullified the majority of his vetoes. Unsuccessful in a reelection bid, President Grant appointed him Postmaster of Atlanta, serving (1875-83).
