US Congressman. After graduating from the law department of the University of Georgia, in 1821, he was admitted and proceeded to practice law in Sandersville, Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia State Senate, served in the Georgia State House of Representatives, was a promoter of the Monroe Railroad and appointed on the board of commissioners to arrange a Georgia State finance system, in 1839. In 1843, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Representative-elect John B. Lamar, serving until 1845. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he remained affiliated with the Democratic Party as a delegate, engaged in literary pursuits and continued the practice of law, until his death at age 76.
