At 5'06" and 160lbs, he played the position of Defense for teams in the National Hockey League (NHL), Canadian Amateur Hockey League (CAHL), American Hockey Association (AHA), and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Chouinard played for the Eveleth-Hibbing Rangers from 1925 to 1926, N.F. Stratford from 1926 to 1927, Quebec Beavers from 1927 to 1928, and 1932 to 1933, Ottawa Senators from 1927 to 1928, New Haven Eagles from 1928 to 1931, and 1932 to 1933, Bronx Tigers from 1931 to 1932, and the Tulsa Oilers from 1934 to 1936. He was known both as 'Noisy' and 'Blackie.'
