U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute New York, in 1869 and engaged in engineering in New York and New Jersey. Moving to Alabama, in 1871, he was president and general manager of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company and founder of the Cahaba Coal Mining Company, in 1892. In 1896, he successfully contested the election of Oscar W. Underwood and was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving until 1897. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed by President Taft, Postmaster of Birmingham, Alabama, serving (1911-15). During World War I, he served on the War Industries Board. After the war, he was a mining engineer until his death at age 83. He also was the older brother of U. S. Congressman William F. Aldrich.
